Are software patents ‘a bit of a mess’?

In 1968, Martin Goetz was awarded the first patent on his code solution for sorting data. As smartphone wars are inclining and many patent infringements are being filed in the US, Martin thinks that the field is now “a big mess” and hopes that “it will get straightened out in time”.
